Painting ideas are sometimes constructed in the studio by collaging several images together. In the case of My Thai Volkswagen I combined various days and observation into one single composition. This religious Thai man I had actually spied at the train station as we had waited on a bench. His attire was so light as the wind blew through it, immediately I fell in love with it and felt an urge to capture it. Later on in the trip through Thailand this Volkswagen had sped past us while we sipped smoothies on the porch of a restaurant half way on the sidewalk. In reality the man had not been holding flowers, I added that later because I wanted petals or leaves to fly about the scene. What I like about this scene is how the wind is blowing the man down the street and the car is speeding straight into it. In my imagination those flowers are a gift for a woman he is falling in love with.
