WSJ: Apple, Foursquare in talks to share local data

WSJ Apple, Foursquare in talks to share local data

The battle over localized data continues to heat up, and according to rumor's Apple's next weapon against Google, Nokia and the rest could be a partnership with Foursquare. Last week TechCrunch noted a check-in tweeted by Apple SVP Eddy Cue, coincidentally at the same time Foursquare CEO Dennis Crowley happened to be in the San Francisco area. Now, the Wall Street Journal has followed up with its always-helpful "people familiar with the talks" who indicate that yes, the two are in early discussions about sharing data.

Currently, iOS features deep ties with Yelp, but Apple could swap in Foursquare and its check-in supported database, giving both a leg up on the competition. At the same time, Foursquare's iOS app received an update today, shifting location details like phone number and hours to the top, and bringing bigger photos and info after users have checked in somewhere. Of course, we'll have to wait for an official announcement to see what, if anything may arise from the talks, but with Google's Maps app off to a quick start on the App Store, the folks in Cupertino may not want to wait very long.

Not Another Year Of New Years Resolutions!!!Freefall Self ...

Not another year of New Years Resolutions ? I find it ironic that every year we have a structure in our society which we tolerate where nine times out of ten we set ourselves up for so called ?failure? and another year goes by and we do it all again ? enough already!

I have a process in my education called the ?Ludicrousy Cycle?, and personally speaking New Years Resolutions are just ludicrous ? I do own however how this may land for some of you who diligently make a record of everything you wish to achieve and achieve it ? not aiming this at you ? top marks if this is the case BUT why are we so hell bent on gauging our success on goals we make at the start of the year which for the majority of the population we never achieve.

I have a vocation where I live each and breath goal setting, and not just at the start of the year ? don?t get me wrong, the psychology of a New Year is very powerful but not when it is a structure to keep us disempowered!

Here?s a question for you? ?How many people reading this blog today can say that they achieve what they set out to every year as a result of declaring it as a New Years resolution? ?If the percentage is high then all power to you, if the percentage is medium to low I have my take on why this is?

Top 10 Reasons People Do Not Achieve Goals Set As New Years Resolutions

1. ?SABOTAGE ? we as human beings naturally sabotage anything good in our lives yet hardly ever admit this to ourselves

2. ?EVIDENCE ? we need to find evidence that we cannot achieve x,y,z to prove our default (disempowered listening we have of ourselves) ? does this serve us, not from our empowered self BUT it definitely does from the disempowered self ? history and track record proves where our commitment truly lies

3. ?DISASSOCIATION ? we are disassociated from the costs of keeping a cycle in place that no longer serves us ?- being disassociated from the power of our spoken word keeps that elusive goal outside of our grasp

4. ? JUSTIFICATION ? we love using excuses as to why we cannot achieve xyz ? this lets us off the hook ? if you haven?t noticed it works! ?Couldn?t afford to do it, didn?t have the time, something else came up etc etc

5. ?JUDGMENT ? This is not only with New Years Resolutions but within the human psyche we tend to fly below the radar for showing up above the radar we get judged, assessed and criticized, and yes sometimes from our well meaning friends and family members, those closest to us! ?We can?t be too successful, we can?t stand out, we can?t be too selfish, and can?t be too showy?you get the jist

6. ?WANT VERSUS COMMITMENT PARADIGM ? we live in a false world stating that we are COMMITTED when all the time we are living on the court called ?WANT?. ?If you have not noticed the results are never produced on that court. ?When someone who legitimately thinks that they are committed is challenged, that they are not, they become very defensive because normally they are working their butts off with little or no results are happening ? why ? because they have not learnt the lesson of what it takes to be committed! ?Commitment = Results ? simple formula ? if the results are not produced in the area of your life that you state that you are committed, you are not committed ? sobering thought!

7. ?COURAGE ? there is an unwillingness to confront whats in the way, and an unwillingness ?to be with the resistance for it feels uncomfortable. ?Confrontation, resistance, and feeling uncomfortable are just feelings, they have no power unless you live at consequence to them. ?To be courageous is to embrace these feelings and take the required action anyway!

8. ?NO ROBUST PLAN ? I am a project management queen, I understand the power of planning ? 90% of projects fail because people do not spend time in the planning phase ? and for those who do put the effort in they are not disciplined in what it means to work to plan ? how crazy it that. ?Put all that effort in and then not be disciplined to follow through, why bother! ?Or theres those that love stating 50% complete, 70% complete and keep deferring out ? when you work to plan your word is gospel to accomplish what you say you will within a said timeframe ? NO MATTER WHAT!

9. ?FRUSTRATION ? the epidemic craziness in our society is living in the realm of DOING ? this is not fulfilling, nor satisfying ? what it is, is extremely FRUSTRATING! ?But we tolerate this. ?No one in their right mind would live in the mode of driving, striving forcing if they were associated to the costs of this type of behavior ? but we keep doing it!!! ?To alleviate frustration we need to learn the art of co-creating, thereby manifesting the results to come to us as a function of who we are BEING!

10. ?NO ACCOUNTABILITY OR SUPPORT ? name a successful person and I can guarantee they had support, they had guidance, they had people who held them to account. ?They had conviction from their soul that they would not allow anything to deter them from their goal/s.

So, do yourself a favor and DO NOT write down any New Years resolutions this year UNLESS you are willing to address these 10 points. ?I would prefer you to declare the following ? ?This year I am unwilling to write down any New Years Resolutions because I am unwilling to do what it takes to achieve them? ? that would be a more honest approach and it would save yourself a lot of heartache.

On the other hand if you are willing to do what it takes ? by all means ? GO FOR IT! ?And I commend you for your achievements in advance for I get what it takes to lead a committed life!

Chasing dolphins and tropical birds | Rowan Family Tree

Today we chased dolphins and birds across the gulf of the Osa Peninsula. What a noteworthy, wonderful day.

We woke insanely early ( even by Costan Rican standards) to catch a ride on a Toyota truck to town, which was one hour?s drive away. Our driver was the brother of the fellow that drove us in- both were lovely men. We had a quickly drive into town over the rocky road. It must be so difficult to maintain roads in the torrential downpours that they experience every day (and all day during the rainy season.) but, as our driver said, in Costa Rica you don?t need good roads? You need a good truck!

We arrived at the pier and met the boss of the tour company. ?The precursor to the next bit is that yesterday, when we booked the tour, our hotel manager asked the tour company twice if they had small life jackets for small people, and they confirmed. Anyway, we arrived at the pier, and I asked the tour boss if they had small life jackets and he said ?of course! On the boat!? S we hopped on and ? Guess what? No life jackets. ?In fact, the guide said ?oh, we just keep the life jackets (all adult sized) tied to the sides.. No need to put them on.?

Ok, so I understand different countries have different ideas of safe (hello! Ethiopia! ) but we asked three times and the fellow flat out lied. So buyer beware? Either bring your own kid life jackets or see the proof before you get on board. I grew up on boats and there is just no way I would have left harbour if we thought they didn?t have life jackets for my barely-swimming kids.

Anyway, despite the girls being wrapped up in huge life jackets that probably would have drowned them if they had gone over. .. We had a lovely time. We saw so many birds along the edge where the primary rainforest meets the water, and then happened on small pod of bottle nosed dolphins. It was neat how they would rise around us, and the girls were thrilled. ?Then we went to where the rive cut into the mangroves? And wow.. The birds. Just amazing. There were some common birds that we recognized from home, such as great blue herons, and osprey? But many more that we recognized the shape of, but were different species. ?The was an amazing rookery of pelicans that included hundreds throughout the trees. Pretty awesome.

On our way back from the mangroves we saw a huge pod of spotted dolphins? There were probably 50 or 60 of the playful animals? So cool. A few of them raced under the nose of our small boat, while others played and jumped through the wake of the boat. There was one especially silly guy who decided to show us how high he could jump, and I got amazing pictures of him springing over and over through the air. ?I don?t think any of us realized how playful and friendly they are in the wild.

The girls fell asleep in the boat on the way home, and it reminded me of that same feeling I had when I was a kid riding on long trips in our family boat? The warm compression of a life jacket, the hum of the boat motor, the slap of the waves and the warm wind washing over me.

On the way home, our lovely driver took a short side tour o a Lillie eco area to show us alligators.. Small but lots of them, and really cool in the wild. Sugar was chewing her nails all the time, and Spice didn?t let go of my hand, but I enjoyed it, anyway!

Some other gems so far about the topics? Costa Ricans are more private than Canadians, so only ONCE! At the alligator thing was I asked if the girls were twins, and ?they are so beautiful.? No one has asked at all about their background or adoption? What an unexpected blessing!

Ants consume anything? The girls were eating a cookie yesterday at the table beside the pool, and 20 minutes later there was a busy ant trail climbing up the umbrella post and carting away the cookie remainders. There was also a piece of fruit on the paths the day we arrived and three days later, it?s almost disintegrated. The jungle is amazing.

The insects are also awesome.. Not biting insects. In fact, the only stings we had were from the jellyfish today (thought of you, Ena!) but these monster butterflies, beetles and long-legged crawlers are everywhere. ?So beautiful.

Tsunami Warning Cancelled After Powerful Earthquake Hits Japan

Posted December 7th, 2012 at 7:35 am (UTC-4)

A powerful earthquake shook Japan's northeastern coast, triggering a small tsunami and causing buildings to sway as far away as Tokyo.

A one-meter high tsunami swept ashore Friday in Ishinomaki, in Miyagi prefecture, the same region that was devastated by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

There were no immediate reports of damage from Friday's 7.3 magnitude quake that struck off the coast. Japanese authorities have since lifted any tsunami warnings.

National broadcaster NHK broke off normal programming to report on the quake and repeatedly urged coastal residents to flee to higher ground.

Last year's 9.0 earthquake and subsequent tsunami killed or left missing around 20,000 people and caused meltdowns at the Fukushima Number One nuclear plant in the worst nuclear disaster since the 1986 Chernobyl disaster in the Soviet Union.

The U.S Geological Survey said Friday's quake struck 36 kilometres under the Pacific, 245 kilometers southeast of Kamaishi.

Good news on employment, bad news on Canadian productivity ...

There are three very important labour market releases out this morning: both Canada and the U.S. published their November employment numbers, and Statistics Canada also released the labour productivity growth figures for the July-September period.

Here?s a quick look at the numbers, plus a list of recommended readings if you want to know more about the context and significance of these economic indicators.

All is well in the Canadian labour market?much better than expected, in fact. The economy churned out an impressive 59,000 more jobs in November, well above the consensus expectation of a 7,500 gain. The hiring came mostly from the private sector and in terms of full-time jobs, and employment levels increased or were unchanged across all provinces.?The unemployment rate dipped 0.2 percentage points to 7.2 per cent, the lowest level since March and below the consensus forecast of 7.4 per cent unemployment.

Source: Statistics Canada

The numbers could be an indication that economic growth is rebounding in the last three months of the year after GDP growth dropped to a meagre 0.6 per cent between July and September.

Recommended reads:

1. The Haves and Have Nots of Canada?s Labour Market. CIBC?s Benjamin Tal finds Canada has a shortage of doctors, nurses, engineers and scientists (among others) and a surplus of butchers, bakers, office managers, blue-collar manufacturing workers and school teachers. 2. The Bank of Canada?s Financial Systems Review. Skip to page 31, where the BoC discusses how a sharp rise in unemployment would provoke a spike in the percentage of Canadian households unable to repay their loans in time.

Good news south of the border as well. The economy added?146,000 in November, which was below this year?s monthly average of 151,000 gains, but well above the consensus expectation of a dismal 95,000 jobs gain. The disruptions wrought by Superstorm Sandy, it turns out, didn?t affect national employment trends all that much.?The unemployment rate edged down to 7.7 per cent from 7.9 per cent in October.

Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics

Recommended reads:

These numbers are much less flattering. Canadian workers? productivity, or the output produced on average per hour worked (which is measure by dividing real GDP by an estimate of total hours worked over a certain period), dipped 0.5 per cent between July and September after declining 0.6 per cent between April and June.

Average hourly wages, though, kept climbing, rising 0.9 per cent in the third quarter after a 0.1 per cent increase in the second quarter. This marks four consecutive quarters in which wages have grown faster than productivity.

Birmingham mayor's security detail, in spotlight after interstate shootout, is decades-old practice

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama - The Birmingham mayor's security detail - thrust into the spotlight after last week's shootout on a downtown interstate that left two people wounded - is almost as old as the city's form of government.

The practice of assigning Birmingham Police officers to protect the mayor began in 1967 with Mayor George Siebels, the second mayor elected under the city's mayor/council act. The practice has remained since, although manpower has grown.

Now, Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper said, the detail is made up of one police lieutenant and five other officers who are not only assigned to the mayor, but are charged with securing city hall.

The cost? The normal salaries of the police officers, plus the cost of the vehicle, which is paid by the mayor's office. That amounts to about $300,000 a year.

"Being the mayor of Birmingham is a high-profile public office in a city with a rich and storied civil rights history,'' Roper said. "When coupled with the challenges of providing government service in a post 911 society, I believe like many chiefs before me that the BPD is the best and most qualified agency to provide security for our mayor."

The mayor's security detail became a hot topic one week ago today when officers became involved in a shootout on I-59/20 at the 22nd Street exit. According to police and city officials, here is what happened:

Bell and his security detail, sworn Birmingham police officers, were on the way home from a YMCA fundraiser at the Wine Loft downtown and driving along Eighth Avenue North. The mayor's vehicle, a Chevrolet Suburban, stopped at a traffic light in the 300 block of Eighth Avenue North as the entourage headed toward the mayor's College Hills home. Bell and the officers noticed a Lincoln Town Car across the intersection from their car, facing the mayor's vehicle. A man was sitting on the sill of the opened passenger's window, wielding a handgun. That man, dressed dark clothing, a skull cap and gloves, opened fire.

The mayor's security detail continued down Eighth Avenue, called in a report of shots fired and provided a description of the suspects' Town Car. In the meantime, the Town Car looped back around and was again back in front of the mayor's vehicle again, firing shots a second time.

The mayor's vehicle followed the Town Car onto the northbound interstate, eventually turning on lights and sirens. The suspects' vehicle crashed into a concrete guardrail. The security officers got out of the car and repeatedly told the suspects to get out and show their hands, but to no avail.

Gunfire erupted from the Town Car, and officers returned fire. A man and a woman were struck. A third person was taken into custody. No charges have yet been filed in connection with the incident. Authorities have been interviewing witnesses all week.

Roper said the primary duty of the officers assigned to the mayor's detail is to ensure the mayor's safety in his day-to-day operations. The officers provide Bell transportation to and from his daily duties, and also to and from after-hours functions. "And there are many,'' Roper said.

The officers assigned to Bell's detail serve at the mayor's discretion. The costs are the same as officers assigned to other divisions, whether it be patrol or a detective bureau.

The chief said the practice of providing security to the Birmingham mayor goes back to at least 1967. Seibels, who served as mayor from 1967 to 1975, had two security officers. Roper said it isn't known whether Mayor David Vann had a security detail.

There is no doubt, however, that Mayor Richard Arrington was provided security when he was elected in 1979 as Birmingham's first black mayor. There were threats on his life, and his home. All mayors following Arrington have had security.

Roper said the officers on the mayor's detail have similar scheduling shifts as other officers throughout the department. The lieutenant schedules the shifts according to the needs. It's a common practice, he said. "Most large cities have some type of security details for their mayor which can be adjusted as the need requires,'' Roper said. "For example, when I started my law enforcement career with the Montgomery Police Department in 1985, the mayor and his spouse had a security detail. At that time, the department also provided overnight security at the mayor's residence."

In Huntsville, there is security for Mayor Tommy Battle. His staff said that for security reasons, they don't discuss the details, but said Battle is provided security and that team operates in different layers depending on the need and the level of activity. It is a similar story for Mobile Mayor Samuel Jones, who has a full-time sworn officer with him at all times, and sometime more if the situation calls for it, according to his staff.

"Most cities handle it according to their tradition, requirements and security concerns,'' Roper said. "There are times we'll need to supplement the operation depending on other visiting dignitaries and security issues. For example, 2013 is a big year with the 50th anniversary of the 16th Street Church bombing."

Though the public has questioned whether Bell's security officers should have gotten him to safety instead of getting involved with the suspects, Bell has said he 100 percent supports their actions. They tried to get him out of danger, he said, but when danger kept reappearing, the mayor said his and his security team's concern was for the general public. "I would have been derelict in my duty, and they would have been derelict in their duties, had they not done what they did because there is no telling what else (the suspects) would have done. We're just grateful the public in general was not harmed in any way."

Bell held a press conference days after the shooting. He spoke of his ordeal, and said he wasn't the target of the gunfire. The mayor said he's grateful for the officers that surround him. He said there is a special bond between a security detail and the person they are charged with protecting. "The fact that they were willing to put their lives on the line to protect me and the general public speaks volumes."

US sources: Syria puts sarin chemicals into bombs

Pentagon sources tell NBC News that the Syrian military is awaiting final orders to launch chemical weapons against its own people after precursor chemicals for deadly sarin gas were loaded into aerial bombs. NBC's Jim Miklaszewski reports.

By Jim Miklaszewski and M. Alex Johnson, NBC News

Updated at 8:20 a.m. ET: The Syrian military is prepared to use chemical weapons against its own people and is awaiting final orders from President Bashar Assad, U.S. officials told NBC News on Wednesday.

The military has loaded the precursor chemicals for sarin, a deadly nerve gas, into aerial bombs that could be dropped onto the Syrian people from dozens of fighter-bombers, the officials said.?

As recently as Tuesday, officials had said there was as yet no evidence that the process of mixing the "precursor" chemicals had begun. But Wednesday, they said their worst fears had been confirmed: The nerve agents were locked and loaded inside the bombs.

Sarin is an extraordinarily lethal agent. Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's forces killed 5,000 Kurds with a single sarin attack on Halabja in 1988.

U.S. officials stressed that as of now, the sarin bombs hadn't been loaded onto planes and that Assad hadn't issued a final order to use them. But if he does, one of the officials said, "there's little the outside world can do to stop it."

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton reiterated U.S. warnings to Assad not to use chemical weapons, saying he would be crossing "a red line" if he did so.

So far, intelligence sources say, bombs loaded with the components of sarin haven't yet been loaded onto planes. NBC's Jim Miklaszewski reports.

Speaking Wednesday at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Clinton said the Syrian government was on the brink of collapse, raising the prospect that "an increasingly desperate Assad regime" might turn to chemical weapons or that the banned weapons could fall into other hands.

"Ultimately, what we should be thinking about is a political transition in Syria and one that should start as soon as possible," Clinton said. "We believe their fall is inevitable. It is just a question of how many people have to die before that occurs."

Aides told NBC News that Clinton was expected next week to officially recognize the main opposition movement, the National Coalition of Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces, with which she is scheduled to meet in Morocco. Britain, France, Turkey and some key Arab leaders have already recognized the opposition.

Fighting intensified Wednesday in the 21-month civil war, which has left 40,000 people dead. The U.N. withdrew its personnel from Damascus, saying conditions were too dangerous.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, speaking Wednesday at NATO headquarters in Brussels, said the fall of Syrian President Bashar Assad's government was "inevitable."

The government said this week that it wouldn't use chemical weapons on its own people after President Barack Obama warned that doing so would be "totally unacceptable."

But U.S. officials said this week that the government had ordered its Chemical Weapons Corps to "be prepared," which Washington interpreted as a directive to begin bringing together the components needed to weaponize Syria's chemical stockpiles.

U.S. officials had long believed that the Syrian government was stockpiling the banned chemical weapons before it acknowledged possessing them this summer.

NBC News reported in July that U.S. intelligence agencies believed that in addition to sarin, Syria had access to tabun, a chemical nerve agent, as well as traditional chemical weapons like mustard gas and hydrogen cyanide.

Officials told NBC News at the time that the Syrian government was moving the outlawed weapons around the country, leaving foreign intelligence agencies unsure where they might end up.

Syria is one of only seven nations that hasn't ratified the 1992 Chemical Weapons Convention, the arms control agreement that outlaws the production, stockpiling and use of such weapons.

Bombshells filled with chemicals can be carried by Syrian Air Force fighter-bombers, in particular Sukhoi-22/20, MiG-23 and Sukhoi-24 aircraft. In addition, some reports indicate that unguided short-range Frog-7 artillery rockets may be capable of carrying chemical payloads.

In terms of longer-range delivery systems, Syria has a few dozen SS-21 ballistic missiles with a maximum range of 72 miles; 200 Scud-Bs, with a maximum range of 180 miles; and 60 to 120 Scud-Cs, with a maximum range of 300 miles, all of which are mobile and are capable of carrying chemical weapons, according U.S. intelligence officials.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton echoed President Obama's recent vow to take action if Syrian President Bashar Assad uses chemical weapons during the ongoing clashes within his country. U.S. officials are also concerned about the rising influence of extremist groups within Syria. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

Hamas chief's Gaza visit sign of regional embrace

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) ? The supreme Hamas leader's first-ever visit to the Gaza Strip this weekend signals growing regional acceptance of the Islamic militant movement in charge of the once isolated territory and grudging acquiescence by Israel.

Hamas chief Khaled Mashaal, who has positioned himself as a pragmatist and enjoys the backing of regional heavyweights Egypt, Turkey and Qatar, could also use the trip to lobby for re-election.

Mashaal is to arrive Friday for a three-day tour, with Hamas' 25th anniversary rally on Saturday set as the centerpiece. He'll visit the homes of two Hamas icons assassinated by Israel, military chief Ahmed Jabari and spiritual leader Sheik Ahmed Yassin.

His landmark visit comes two weeks after the bloodiest round of Israel-Gaza fighting in four years, which included the killing of Jabari as well as hundreds of Israeli airstrikes on Hamas targets and an equal number of Gaza rockets fired into Israel.

Hamas has portrayed itself as the victor because Israel agreed to an Egyptian-brokered truce after eight days, instead of sending ground troops, as it initially threatened.

On Thursday, workers set up the stage for the anniversary rally, including a 13-meter-high (43-foot-high) replica of an M-75, a missile Hamas has fired deep into Israel. "Made in Gaza," was written on the rocket.

Mashaal's visit coincides with the last stretch of secret internal Hamas elections that began seven months ago.

Mashaal, who has headed Hamas' decision-making political bureau since 1996, said earlier this year he is not seeking re-election, but some suggested his Gaza visit could signal a change of heart and an attempt to mollify Gaza Hamas hardliners with whom he clashed months ago.

Palestinian analyst Hani al-Masri said he believes the main purpose of the trip is an attempt supported by Egypt, Turkey and Qatar to get Mashaal re-elected. "Egypt, Qatar and Turkey want Khaled Mashaal, simply because he is a moderate and can get things done between the West and the Islamists," said al-Masri.

Israel, meanwhile, appears to be looking the other way.

Israel considers Hamas a terror organization, refuses to deal with it directly and imposed a Gaza border blockade after the Hamas takeover of the territory in 2007. However, since its Gaza offensive last month, Israel has conducted indirect talks with Hamas, through Egypt, on a truce and a further easing of the Gaza border restrictions, already relaxed somewhat in recent years.

Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said Thursday that Israel has no say over who enters Gaza from Egypt. "We have no position on different individuals within Hamas," he said when asked about the Mashaal trip. "Hamas is Hamas is Hamas."

Fifteen years ago, Mashaal came close to being assassinated by Israel. In 1997, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, then in his first term, ordered Mashaal killed in retaliation for Hamas suicide bombings in Israel. Israeli agents grabbed Mashaal in the streets of the Jordanian capital of Amman and injected him with poison, but were caught, forcing Netanyahu to send an antidote that saved Mashaal's life. Netanyahu also had to release Yassin, the Hamas spiritual leader, to bring the agents back home.

While Israel has not publicly challenged Mashaal's Gaza trip, Hamas' smaller sister group Islamic Jihad said Thursday that Israel is trying to prevent its exiled leaders from joining the Hamas chief on his journey. Two members of Islamic Jihad said Israel relayed warnings through Egypt that it would consider the Gaza truce over if Islamic Jihad's top two leaders in exile attempted to enter Gaza.

The Islamic Jihad members spoke on condition of anonymity because they did not want to embarrass Egypt. Israel's Defense Ministry had no immediate comment.

Both Hamas and Islamic Jihad have received money and weapons from Iran, Israel's arch-enemy. During last month's cross-border fighting, Hamas fired hundreds of rockets into Israel, including Iranian-made Fajr-5 rockets that landed close to Tel Aviv and Jerusalem in Israel's heartland. After the cease-fire, Mashaal thanked Iran for its military support of Gaza.

At the same time, Hamas under Mashaal has been drifting away from the Iranian-Syrian camp, particularly after Hamas' break with Syrian President Bashar Assad this year over his brutal crackdown at home.

Mashaal has been trying to move Hamas closer to its parent movement, the region-wide Muslim Brotherhood, a Sunni group. The Brotherhood, a rival of Shiite Muslim-led Iran, rose to power in Egypt and Tunisia after last year's Arab Spring uprisings. Mashaal also has close ties with Turkey and Qatar, the Gulf state to which he moved this year after abandoning his longtime base in Syria.

Both Egypt and Qatar have tried to broker a reconciliation deal between Hamas and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, from whom Hamas seized Gaza more than five years ago. The most recent deal was signed this year by Abbas and Mashaal in the Qatari capital of Doha, but Mashaal couldn't move forward because of an uproar by Hamas hardliners in Gaza.

Senior figures in Gaza, including Hamas strongman Mahmoud Zahar, complained at the time that they hadn't been consulted. But mainly they balked at the idea of restoring some of Abbas' authority in Gaza ahead of new elections ? as envisioned by the Doha deal.

Saeb Erekat, an Abbas aide in the West Bank, said Thursday that the Mashaal visit to Gaza might help a unity deal. "This would give a chance to everyone in Gaza to hear what the agreement in Doha was about," he said.

However, the Mashaal visit and Hamas' successful dare of Israel ? firing rockets toward Tel Aviv without triggering an Israeli ground offensive ? also signaled that the Gaza branch of Hamas is becoming increasingly influential at the expense of the exiles.

In the past, the exile-based political bureau was the main decision-maker and conduit for funds. In running Gaza, Hamas leaders there are increasingly making fateful decisions for the movement.

With Hamas basking in its self-declared victory over Israel, the group might be even less willing than before to compromise with Abbas for the sake of a unity deal. At the same time, reconciliation faces a host of other obstacles, including opposition from Abbas' Fatah movement and lack of a clear path forward, including how to merge rival security forces.

Hamas leaders in Gaza portrayed the Mashaal visit as part of an extended celebration of what they see as their military triumph. "Mashaal is coming at a time when we are celebrating victory in the war," said Salah Bardawil, a local Hamas leader. "A Hamas leader should come and celebrate with his people."

Become Content By Following These Self Improvement Guidelines

Focusing on improving yourself is a smart way to start getting your life back on track. This can help you think on where to start in making great changes when it comes to your life. Here?s a list of great tips to get your creative juices flowing and set you happily on the road to positive personal development.

Place your personal central principles into practice. Each individual has beliefs that he or she follows all the time. Having a good foundation based on your core principles will benefit your sense of self esteem. This will also help you develop consistency.

Organize your life. The process of cleaning up and organizing provides a massive boost to your self-esteem. Furthermore, you will feel accomplished after you finish this undertaking. In addition, you won?t stress out anymore from the messes. Having everything put away and neatly organized can give you a sense of peace.

Increasing the complex carbs in your diet can help manage depression. Complex carbohydrates are essential to producing serotonin, which helps to lift your mood. Complex carbs that you can easily eat to raise these levels include whole grains, nuts, raw vegetables and more.

Write yourself a pep talk. List all your great attributes on an index card. You can take this with you wherever you go, and review it when you want motivation. Even better, you should videotape yourself, reading the list into the camera and watch this video frequently. Sounds intriguing, right?

Other than the Ivy League, most employers don?t really care where you graduated from, so long as you got the degree and have the necessary skills. The exceptions to this include high-finance type jobs, in which graduation from an Ivy League school adds cachet to your credentials. It is really more important to simply have a quality degree that will open up opportunities for you.

Leaders are humble, though powerful and strict too. You must be resolute but compassionate if you want to lead. Also, recall what it is like to serve someone. A good leader is virtuous and full of integrity, something you need in order to be successful.

Set reasonable, achievable goals for yourself. If you find your weaknesses and work on them, you can also become a better person.

When you feel anger start to boil over, stop before you react and count to ten. Another technique is to breathe deeply and imagine a peaceful place. Stay grounded and only say something you can live with tomorrow.

Therapy might be the solution for people who have serious issues. While self-help books help to a certain degree, seeing a therapist has more personalized substance to it. Sometimes, talk therapy can help you discover a breakthrough. The therapeutic discussion that you can have with a psychiatrist, is beyond the abilities of even the most comprehensive and detailed self-help book.

Sexual capitol is a trait that is attracting a lot of attention to researchers that study personal development. This has nothing to do with using sex appeal to get the things you covet. It has more to do with charm. Not everyone has good social skills, but these can help you go farther in all aspects of your life.

This article should have shown you that helping yourself involves a lot of hard work to start making viable changes in your life. One thing to keep in mind is that if you want to see noticeable results, you have to stick to it. An occasional reflection on the previously mentioned tips can help to improve your life.

SKorea to reroute flights on NKorean rocket path

(AP) ? South Korea said Monday that it plans to reroute passenger flights over the Yellow Sea to avoid possible collisions with debris from a long-range rocket that North Korea plans to launch this month.

The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs said it made the decision after learning that North Korea had informed China and Singapore of the flight path and other details of the launch.

North Korea told those nations the rocket would be launched in the morning and its debris would fall into the Yellow Sea and in waters east of the Philippines.

The International Maritime Organization said Monday that North Korea had informed it that it planned to launch a satellite between Dec. 10-22 during the hours of 7 a.m and noon. The North provided a list of dangerous coordinates where debris could fall.

South Korean officials said they will reroute six Korean Air flights. They also are considering whether to reroute or change the departure times of several Korean Air and Asiana Airlines flights to Manila.

In a defiant move expected to raise the stakes of a global standoff over its missile and nuclear programs, the North announced Saturday that it would launch a rocket mounted with a polar-orbiting Earth observation satellite this month.

The United States considers North Korea's rocket launches to be veiled covers for tests of technology for long-range missiles designed to strike the United States. Such tests are banned by the U.N. Security Council which has imposed two rounds of sanctions on the North following its nuclear tests.

It would be North Korea's second launch attempt under leader Kim Jong Un, who took power following his father Kim Jong Il's death nearly a year ago. The embarrassing misfire of its last rocket eight months ago earned the country widespread international condemnation.

The Korean Committee for Space Technology said the launch was a request of late leader Kim Jong Il. He died on Dec. 17, 2011, and North Koreans are expected to mark that date this year with some fanfare.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged North Korea "not to take any further provocative actions that will heighten tension in the region" after the failed launch in April, and U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky said Monday "his view has not changed on the matter."

Ban called the failed launch "deplorable" because it defied international opinion, violated a U.N. Security Council ban, "and was a threat to international stability," Nesirky told reporters at U.N. headquarters in New York.

Computers and Technology Growth of Computer Forensics ...

Growth of Computer Forensics

Awhile ago I?d been hired by way of a computer forensics company to work like a consultant. It is a term that mingles sleuthing, marketing, and sales. Forensic investigative work takes years of training and passing several certifications, like IACIS, the International Association of Computer Investigative Specialists. Following a crash programme in computer forensics, I continued my research.

Computer forensics is usually an expanding field because the best way to have grown to be sophisticated in computer use, and a few of these people use computers as well as other digital devices for criminal purposes. The growth in this field ranges from 22 to 27 percent through 2018. This growth is reflected in the increase in private investigators and computer support related jobs. (Depending on geteducated.com.) Most of the data I find linked to contemporary news in computer forensics is new programs on offer by universities and colleges. Other news relates to new labs being opened both privately and also by the nation?s government.

Some of the information I follow is related to spamming, hacking, cyber stalking, along with other computer crimes. This content are growing in number, with all the perpetrators ranging in age from teens to older adults. Criminal activity can take are securities fraud, embezzlement, and data theft.

Attorneys could happen. They?re on both sides of criminal and civil cases that relate to computers. They?re educating themselves in computer forensics so that you can hire smart, efficient website visitors to take care of their evidence and subsequent investigation of the data recovered. Attorneys have realized they may be learning a fresh technique in litigation.

Overall, the development in computer forensic jobs relates to the increase used of computers by individuals. This relatively recent part of computer jobs has limited info on the increase with this industry. News releases plus the need for degree to include this subject to their curriculum?s point out growth.

Nurturing many problems from computer crimes to data recovery, P Weese enjoys doing its job an undercover geek.

Getting Top Dollar | bubbleinfo.com

Are you thinking of selling your house?? Do you want top dollar?

It is OK if you don?t want or need top dollar.? Because if you want to offload your house quickly, there are many who will buy it outright, or agents who claim that they will pay you CASH for yours, if you buy their listing.? Because they are re-sellers, they will offer you a wholesale price, with their ample future profits built in.

Oh, you DO want top dollar?

First let?s identify the standard operating procedure for realtors in a hot market.? A couple of months ago you heard the current president of the association of realtors say on blog talk radio that once he takes a listing, he first offers it to his stable of buyers.? If he doesn?t have a taker himself, then he offers it to other agents in his office before inputting it onto the MLS.

The ?sandbagging? method is practiced in most real estate offices in America ? where management encourages agents to keep sales ?in-house? (and usually offers them a better commission split).? Have you seen a listing get inputted, then immediately marked ?pending?, with the only remarks being ?sold before processing??

You have probably seen that virtually every listing inputted today cannot be shown for 5-15 days.? Why? Because once on the MLS, the listing gets on all the real estate portals, giving the listing agent a big head-start at finding the buyer themselves and selling it before the open market gets a chance.

How do those sellers know that they got top dollar? They don?t, and won?t.

There is ONLY ONE WAY to know for sure that you got top dollar.

The property needs full exposure to the open market, and when done right, a bidding war ensues.

First you need a realtor who specializes in bidding wars, and if you are in San Diego County, that would be me.? Hire Jim the Realtor to sell your house!

This year?I?ve had 29 listings sell, and 14 of them were at, or above, list price.

My listings? overall SP:LP ratio is 99% this year.

Here?s what I do to get you top dollar:

  • Put the right price on it ? at comps (doesn?t need to be under).
  • Advertise on MLS and 90 websites using quality photos and video-tour to get buyers engaged.
  • Conduct open house with signs everywhere the day of MLS-listing input, or Day 2.
  • Create an auction-like setting by telling the bidders what price they need to beat.
  • Be available, make & keep promises, and treat all parties with respect.

While this seems like simple stuff, do you ever see NAR, CAR, any of the big corporate real estate companies or franchises, or any individual realtors talking about the specific details of what they do to ensure top dollar? I don?t, and I?m looking for it. They like keeping it fuzzy and vague.

You see guaranteed-sale programs, ultra-low commission deals, and all sorts of claims about a realtor?s unique expertise.? Do you wonder about the specifics, and why there are none mentioned?

Hire me, and you?ll witness a common-sense approach that ensures a top-dollar sale.

Boehner 'flabbergasted' at 'fiscal cliff' talks

President Obama and his White House team appear to have drawn a line in the sand in talks with House Republicans on the "fiscal cliff."

Tax rates on the wealthy are going up, the only question is how much?

"Those rates are going to have to go up," Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner flatly stated on ABC's "This Week." "There's no responsible way we can govern this country at a time of enormous threat, and risk, and challenge ... with those low rates in place for future generations."

But the president's plan, which Geithner delivered last week, has left the two sides far apart.

In recounting his response today on "Fox News Sunday," House Speaker John Boehner said: "I was flabbergasted. I looked at him and said, 'You can't be serious.'

"The president's idea of negotiation is: Roll over and do what I ask," Boehner added.

The president has never asked for so much additional tax revenue. He wants another $1.6 trillion over the next 10 years, including returning the tax rate on income above $250,000 a year to 39.6 percent.

Boehner is offering half that, $800 billion.

In exchange, the president suggests $600 billion in cuts to Medicare and other programs. House Republicans say that is not enough, but they have not publicly listed what they would cut.

Geithner said the ball is now in the Republicans' court, and the White House is seemingly content to sit and wait for Republicans to come around.

"They have to come to us and tell us what they think they need. What we can't do is to keep guessing," he said.

The president is also calling for more stimulus spending totaling $200 billion for unemployment benefits, training, and infrastructure projects.

"All of this stimulus spending would literally be more than the spending cuts that he was willing to put on the table," Boehner said.

Boehner also voiced some derision over the president's proposal to strip Congress of power over the country's debt level, and whether it should be raised.

"Congress is not going to give up this power," he said. "It's the only way to leverage the political process to produce more change than what it would if left alone."

The so-called fiscal cliff, a mixture of automatic tax increases and spending cuts, is triggered on Jan. 1 if Congress and the White House do not come up with a deficit-cutting deal first.

The tax increases would cost the average family between $2,000 and $2,400 a year, which, coupled with the $500 billion in spending cuts, will most likely put the country back into recession, economists say.

Kuwait boycott bloc hails lower voter turnout

(AP) ? Opposition groups in Kuwait hailed their election boycott as a success Sunday after officials said voter turnout on Saturday was sharply lower than during the last parliamentary races earlier this year.

Kuwait's Ministry of Information said 40.3 percent of eligible voters cast ballots. That compares with nearly 60 percent in the February elections.

As expected, the results point to a solidly pro-government chamber. Three women are among the new 50-seat parliament, which is expected to hold its first session within two weeks after the end of procedural issues to name a new government.

A wide-reaching opposition coalition, including conservative Islamists and Western-leaning liberals, boycotted the vote to protest alleged power abuses by the ruling family. They have vowed to press ahead with street demonstrations despite a ban on major political gatherings in public.

Kuwait's parliament is the most politically powerful among the Gulf Arab states, but the ruling establishment controls all key government posts and policies.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) ? It began like any other Saturday for the Kansas City Chiefs during the NFL season, their general manager and coach at work early to put final touches on this weekend's gameplan. Then they got a call to hurry to the parking lot.

The two men rushed through the glass doors of Chiefs headquarters and came face-to-face with linebacker Jovan Belcher, holding a handgun to his head.

Belcher had already killed his girlfriend and sped the short distance to Arrowhead Stadium, right past a security checkpoint guarding the entrance. Upon finding his bosses, Belcher thanked general manager Scott Pioli and head coach Romeo Crennel for giving him a chance in the NFL. Then he turned away and pulled the trigger.

The murder-suicide shocked a franchise that has been dealing with controversies now made trivial by comparison: eight consecutive losses, injuries too numerous to count, discontent among fans and the prospect that Pioli and Crennel could be fired at season's end.

Authorities did not release a possible motive while piecing together the case, other than to note that Belcher and his girlfriend, 22-year-old Kasandra M. Perkins, had been arguing frequently.

The two of them left behind a 3-month-old girl. She was being cared for by family.

The Chiefs issued a statement that said their game Sunday afternoon against the Carolina Panthers would go on as scheduled, even as the franchise tried to come to grips with the awfulness of Belcher's death.

"The entire Chiefs family is deeply saddened by today's events, and our collective hearts are heavy with sympathy, thoughts and prayers for the families and friends affected by this unthinkable tragedy," Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt said in brief a statement.

A spokesman for the team told The Associated Press that Crennel plans to coach on Sunday.

"I can tell you that you have absolutely no idea what it's like to see someone kill themselves," said Kansas City Mayor Sly James, who spoke to Pioli shortly after the shootings.

"You can take your worst nightmare and put someone you know and love in that situation, and give them a gun and stand three feet away and watch them kill themselves. That's what it's like," James said. "It's unfathomable."

Chiefs quarterback Brady Quinn told The Kansas City Star that when the team met later Saturday morning, Crennel broke the news to them.

"It was obviously tough for coach to have to tell us that," Quinn said. "He really wasn't able to finish talking to us. We got together and prayed and then we moved on."

But Quinn said the team was so stunned, it was hard to digest what had happened.

"It's hard mostly because I keep thinking about what I could have done to stop this," he said. "I think everyone is wondering whether we would have done something to prevent this from happening."

The 25-year-old Belcher was from West Babylon, N.Y., and played college football at Maine. He signed with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent, made the team and hung around the past four years, eventually moving into the starting lineup. He played in all 11 games this season.

The NFL released a statement expressing sympathy and pledging "to provide assistance in any way that we can." The players' association has also been in touch with members of the Chiefs.

"We sincerely appreciate the expressions of sympathy and support we have received from so many in the Kansas City and NFL communities, and ask for continued prayers for the loved ones of those impacted," Hunt said. "We will continue to fully cooperate with the authorities and work to ensure that the appropriate counseling resources are available to all members of the organization."

The drama unfolded early Saturday when authorities received a call from a woman who said her daughter had been shot multiple times at a residence about five miles from the Arrowhead complex. The call came from Belcher's mother, who referred to the victim as her daughter.

"She treated Kasandra like a daughter," Kansas City police spokesman Darin Snapp said, adding that the woman had recently moved in with the couple, "probably to help out with the baby."

Police then got a phone call from the Chiefs' training facility, and Belcher's description matched the suspect description from the initial address. Snapp said officers pulled into the practice facility parking lot in a matter of minutes, in time to witness the suicide.

"Pioli and Crennel and another coach or employee was standing outside and appeared to be talking to him," Snapp said. "The suspect began to walk in the opposite direction of the coaches and the officers and that's when they heard the gunshot. It appears he took his own life."

The coaches told police they never felt in any danger.

"They said the player was actually thanking them for everything they'd done for him," Snapp said. "He was thanking them and everything. That's when he walked away and shot himself."

Members of the Chiefs mostly laid low Saturday, but a few reacted on Twitter.

"I am devastated by this mornings events," Pro Bowl linebacker Tamba Hali wrote. "I want to send my thoughts and prayers out to everyone effected by this tragedy."

A large group of Belcher's friends and relatives gathered Saturday at his boyhood home on Long Island.

His family turned the front yard into a shrine, with a large poster of Belcher, an array of his trophies, and jerseys and jackets from Kansas City, Maine and West Babylon High.

"He was a good, good person ... a family man. A loving guy," said family friend Ruben Marshall, who said he coached Belcher in youth football. "You couldn't be around a better person."

At least 20 people gathered for a large group hug in the driveway.

"He was a tremendous player and all those things, and his accolades speak for themselves, but he lit up when he spoke about his mom, or when he hugged his family after games," said Dwayne Wilmot, who was Belcher's position coach at Maine and is now an assistant coach at Yale.

"It's difficult to talk about Jovan in the past tense," he told the AP. "There's going to be unanswered questions, the why's of this tragedy. It'll never be truly known to us."

Wilmot said he'd stayed in touch with Belcher the past few years through social media.

"He was someone who took genuine pleasure in bringing happiness to others," Wilmot said. "I was so excited when he became a father, because I knew he'd be a great father."

His girlfriend's Facebook page shows the couple smiling and holding the baby.

Belcher is the latest among several players and NFL retirees to die from self-inflicted gunshot wounds during the past few years. The death of star linebacker Junior Seau, who shot himself in the chest in at his California home last May, sent shockwaves around the league.

Seau's family, like those of other suicide victims, donated his brain tissue to medical authorities to determine if head injuries he sustained playing football might be linked to his death. That report has not been released, although an autopsy showed no underlying hemorrhaging or bruises on Seau's brain.

Belcher did not have an extensive injury history, though he was listed as having a head injury on a report from Nov. 11, 2009. Belcher played four days later against the Oakland Raiders.

Earlier this year, the NFL provided a grant to help establish an independently operated phone service that connects players, coaches, team officials and other staff with counselors trained to work through personal and emotional crises. The NFL Life Line is available 24 hours a day.

The season has been a massive disappointment for the Chiefs, who were expected to contend for the AFC West title. They're 1-10 and mired in an eight-game skid marked by injuries, poor play and fan upheaval. During the past few weeks there have been constant calls for Pioli and Crennel to be fired.

It's unknown how the Chiefs plan to pay tribute to Belcher during Sunday's game.

"His move to the NFL was in keeping with his dreams," said Jack Cosgrove, who coached Belcher at Maine. "This is an indescribably horrible tragedy."
